Onboarding

Getting a new employee, or a new customer, properly started.

Please note: This page explains what a term means. It is general information, not legal, financial, tax or investment advice, and it does not know anything about your business. Before you sign, file or commit to anything, check it with an accountant, a solicitor, or the official guidance we link to.

What it means

Employee onboarding covers induction, systems access, training and early check-ins. Customer onboarding covers setup, first use and first value.

Why it matters

Both determine retention. Most employee turnover happens in the first months, and most customer churn happens before the customer has got value from the thing they bought.

What it looks like in practice

For employees: a plan for the first week, a named buddy, and check-ins at one, four and twelve weeks. For customers: get them to first value as fast as possible and check they got there.

What to watch out for

Confusing paperwork with onboarding. A completed contract and a laptop is not an induction.

Where to get proper advice

ACAS for employee induction. Your own churn data by tenure for customers — if it spikes early, onboarding is the problem.
