Delegation
Handing work to somebody else properly. The constraint on most owner-managed businesses.

What it means
Delegation transfers responsibility for a task or an outcome, with the authority and information to do it.
Why it matters
An owner who cannot delegate is a permanent ceiling on the business, and is also the largest key person risk it carries.
What it looks like in practice
Delegate outcomes rather than tasks where you can, and be explicit about the decision rights: decide and act, decide and tell me, or ask me first.\n\nDocumented process — see SOPs — is what makes delegation possible rather than a leap of faith.
What to watch out for
Delegating and then re-doing it. It costs more than doing it yourself and it guarantees you will always have to.
Where to get proper advice
Your own diary, honestly reviewed. Anything you do that somebody cheaper could do is a delegation candidate.
