Mentoring and business support
Getting help from somebody who has done it before. Often free.
Please note: This page explains what a term means. It is general information, not legal, financial, tax or investment advice, and it does not know anything about your business. Before you sign, file or commit to anything, check it with an accountant, a solicitor, or the official guidance we link to.
What it means
Mentoring pairs a business owner with a more experienced one for periodic conversation. Business support includes publicly funded advice, peer groups and specialist consultancy.
Why it matters
Owner isolation is a real problem, and most decisions are better for being tested on somebody with no stake in the answer.
What it looks like in practice
Local Growth Hubs offer free advice and can refer to funded programmes. Peer groups of non-competing owners are often more useful than paid consultancy and cost less.
What to watch out for
Advice from people selling something. Free advice from a supplier is marketing, which does not make it wrong and does make it partial.
Where to get proper advice
Your local Growth Hub, free. The Institute of Directors and sector bodies for peer networks.
