Employee engagement
How committed people are to the work. Measurable, and it moves other numbers.

What it means
Engagement describes the discretionary effort and commitment employees give beyond the minimum.
Why it matters
It correlates with productivity, retention, customer satisfaction and absence. It is also frequently measured and then not acted on, which makes it worse.
What it looks like in practice
A short regular survey beats a long annual one, and acting visibly on two things beats a report on twenty.\n\nThe strongest drivers are usually the immediate manager, clarity of expectations, and feeling heard.
What to watch out for
Surveying and then doing nothing. It is the single most reliable way to reduce engagement.
