Exit interviews

Asking people why they are leaving. Useful if somebody acts on the answers.

Please note: This page explains what a term means. It is general information, not legal, financial, tax or investment advice, and it does not know anything about your business. Before you sign, file or commit to anything, check it with an accountant, a solicitor, or the official guidance we link to.

What it means

An exit interview is a conversation with a departing employee about their experience and reasons for leaving.

Why it matters

It is the cheapest source of information about culture and management, and it is routinely collected and filed.

What it looks like in practice

Conduct it by someone other than the line manager, and look for patterns across leavers rather than acting on one.\n\nStay interviews — asking people who are not leaving what would make them — are more useful and almost nobody does them.

What to watch out for

Honest answers are rare on the way out. Anonymous aggregated data and stay interviews are better sources.
