What it means
Turnover is leavers as a percentage of average headcount over a period. Voluntary and involuntary turnover are worth separating.
Why it matters
Replacing an employee typically costs a significant multiple of their salary once recruitment, lost productivity and time to competence are counted.
What it looks like in practice
Track it by tenure and by manager. High first-year turnover is an onboarding or recruitment problem; turnover concentrated under one manager is a different problem.
What to watch out for
Some turnover is healthy and zero turnover is not a target. The question is who is leaving, not how many.
Where to get proper advice
Exit interviews, conducted by someone other than the line manager, and stay interviews with the people you want to keep.
