Training and development

Building capability. Cheaper than recruiting it, and it is a retention lever.

What it means

Training covers induction, technical skills, compliance, management development and professional qualifications.

Why it matters

Lack of development is one of the most cited reasons for leaving, and internal development is usually cheaper than replacing someone.

What it looks like in practice

Some training is legally required — health and safety, safeguarding in regulated sectors, food hygiene. Record it; inspectors ask for records, not intentions.\n\nApprenticeships fund training for existing staff too, at any age.

What to watch out for

Training agreements requiring repayment if someone leaves. They are enforceable only if the amount is a genuine pre-estimate of loss and tapers over time.

Where to get proper advice

Your local Growth Hub for funded programmes, and the apprenticeship service.
