Employer brand

Your reputation as a place to work. It decides who applies.

Please note: This page explains what a term means. It is general information, not legal, financial, tax or investment advice, and it does not know anything about your business. Before you sign, file or commit to anything, check it with an accountant, a solicitor, or the official guidance we link to.

What it means

Employer brand is what candidates and staff believe about working for you, formed by reviews, word of mouth, the recruitment experience and what current staff say.

Why it matters

In a tight labour market it determines whether you get applicants at all, and it costs nothing to improve relative to advertising more.

What it looks like in practice

The recruitment experience is the most visible part: how quickly you reply, whether unsuccessful candidates hear back, and whether the interview was well run.\n\nGlassdoor and Indeed reviews are read by candidates.

What to watch out for

A great careers page and a bad reality. Candidates talk to current staff, and the gap becomes the story.

Where to get proper advice

Your own exit interviews and application-to-offer data.
