Knowledge management

Capturing what people know so it does not leave with them.

Please note: This page explains what a term means. It is general information, not legal, financial, tax or investment advice, and it does not know anything about your business. Before you sign, file or commit to anything, check it with an accountant, a solicitor, or the official guidance we link to.

What it means

Knowledge management covers documenting processes, decisions, customer history and technical know-how so it is available to others.

Why it matters

Undocumented knowledge is a key person risk and a constraint on delegation, and it is the thing a buyer discounts for.

What it looks like in practice

Document as a by-product of doing the work rather than as a project: notes in the CRM, procedures written the next time the task is done, decisions recorded in minutes.

What to watch out for

A wiki nobody maintains. Documentation that is wrong is worse than none, because somebody will follow it.
