Employee handbook

Your policies in one place. Deliberately not part of the contract.

Please note: This page explains what a term means. It is general information, not legal, financial, tax or investment advice, and it does not know anything about your business. Before you sign, file or commit to anything, check it with an accountant, a solicitor, or the official guidance we link to.

What it means

A handbook collects the policies: absence, disciplinary, grievance, holiday, expenses, IT and social media, equality, whistleblowing, health and safety.

Why it matters

Policies you can change without agreement are worth far more than terms you cannot. Keeping the handbook non-contractual is the point, and it should say so.

What it looks like in practice

Some policies are effectively required: disciplinary and grievance procedures, health and safety, and a written statement of particulars separately.

What to watch out for

Wording that turns a policy into a contractual term — "the company will" rather than "the company aims to" — which means you need agreement to change it.\n\nAnd handbooks nobody has read. Issue it, get an acknowledgement, and refer to it.

Where to get proper advice

ACAS: free guidance, free templates and a free helpline. An employment solicitor for anything contested or senior.
