What it means
Process mapping documents the sequence of steps, decisions, handoffs and delays in a process, usually as a flowchart or swimlane diagram.
Why it matters
Handoffs and waiting are where time and errors accumulate, and they are invisible until drawn. Most people know their own step and not the whole.
What it looks like in practice
Map the current state honestly before designing a better one. Walk it with the people who do it rather than mapping it from an office.\n\nCount the handoffs — each one is a chance for something to stall.
What to watch out for
Mapping the official process. The real one usually has workarounds in it, and those workarounds are information about what is broken.
Where to get proper advice
Your own team. A facilitator only if the process crosses functions that do not talk.
