What it means
An operating model describes the processes, people, structure, systems and locations through which the business delivers its business model.
Why it matters
Strategy fails in execution more often than in conception, and the operating model is where execution lives.
What it looks like in practice
Ask whether the current structure serves the strategy. A business moving from projects to subscription needs a different shape, and the shape usually changes last.
What to watch out for
Reorganising instead of deciding. A restructure without a strategic change is disruption with no purpose.
