Business model canvas
A one-page framework for describing a business model.
Please note: This page explains what a term means. It is general information, not legal, financial, tax or investment advice, and it does not know anything about your business. Before you sign, file or commit to anything, check it with an accountant, a solicitor, or the official guidance we link to.
What it means
The canvas has nine blocks: customer segments, value propositions, channels, customer relationships, revenue streams, key resources, key activities, key partners and cost structure.
Why it matters
It fits a business model on one page, which makes gaps and contradictions visible — a value proposition with no matching channel, or a cost structure that cannot support the revenue model.
What it looks like in practice
Fill it in for the business as it is, then for the business as you want it. The differences are the strategy.\n\nDo it with more than one person; the disagreements are the useful part.
What to watch out for
Treating the completed canvas as the strategy. It is a description, and the decisions come after.
Where to get proper advice
The canvas is freely available. A facilitator only if the honest conversation is not otherwise happening.
