Automation

Getting software to do repetitive work. Cheaper than people, and it scales the process you already have.

Please note: This page explains what a term means. It is general information, not legal, financial, tax or investment advice, and it does not know anything about your business. Before you sign, file or commit to anything, check it with an accountant, a solicitor, or the official guidance we link to.

What it means

Automation replaces manual steps with software — integrations between systems, workflow tools, scripts, or AI-assisted steps.

Why it matters

Administrative time is a large hidden cost in small businesses, and much of it is re-keying data between systems that could talk to each other — see API.

What it looks like in practice

Automate the frequent and the boring first: invoice generation, appointment reminders, data flowing between the CRM and the accounts, and report distribution.\n\nMap the process first — automating a bad process makes it worse faster.

What to watch out for

Automations that fail silently. Anything automated needs a way of noticing when it stops, or you find out from a customer.

Where to get proper advice

Your own list of what your team does repeatedly. Integration tools cover most small-business cases without development.
