Email list building

Collecting permission to email people. The asset nobody can take away.

Please note: This page explains what a term means. It is general information, not legal, financial, tax or investment advice, and it does not know anything about your business. Before you sign, file or commit to anything, check it with an accountant, a solicitor, or the official guidance we link to.

What it means

Building a list means getting contact details with a lawful basis to market to them, and keeping it clean.

Why it matters

Unlike social followers, a list is yours. Its value is entirely in permission and relevance, not in size.

What it looks like in practice

Offer a reason to subscribe. Use a clear opt-in, record when and how consent was given, and honour unsubscribes immediately.\n\nSee email marketing for the PECR rules, which are strict.

What to watch out for

Pre-ticked boxes, bundled consent, and buying lists. The ICO has fined organisations for all three, and the soft opt-in is narrower than most people assume.

Where to get proper advice

The ICO's direct marketing guidance, free and clear.
