Marketing automation

Sending the right message automatically, triggered by what somebody did.

Please note: This page explains what a term means. It is general information, not legal, financial, tax or investment advice, and it does not know anything about your business. Before you sign, file or commit to anything, check it with an accountant, a solicitor, or the official guidance we link to.

What it means

Automation sends sequences triggered by behaviour — a welcome series, an abandoned basket reminder, a renewal prompt.

Why it matters

It does the follow-up that would otherwise not happen. For most small businesses the abandoned basket and the post-enquiry sequence pay for the whole tool.

What it looks like in practice

Start with two sequences, not twenty. Welcome and follow-up cover most of the value.

What to watch out for

Automations that keep running after they should stop — chasing someone who has already bought, or emailing a customer who has complained. Suppression rules matter more than the sequences.

Where to get proper advice

Your email platform's own documentation. Test every sequence on yourself first.
