Lead magnet
Something useful given away in exchange for contact details.
Please note: This page explains what a term means. It is general information, not legal, financial, tax or investment advice, and it does not know anything about your business. Before you sign, file or commit to anything, check it with an accountant, a solicitor, or the official guidance we link to.
What it means
A lead magnet is a guide, checklist, template, calculator or trial offered in return for an email address.
Why it matters
It converts anonymous traffic into people you can contact, which is the step most small business websites are missing entirely.
What it looks like in practice
Make it genuinely useful and specific to one problem. A checklist that solves something in ten minutes beats a fifty-page guide nobody reads.\n\nThe consent for marketing must be separate from the download — see email marketing.
What to watch out for
Bundling consent. "Download the guide" is not consent to a weekly newsletter, and treating it as such is a PECR breach.
Where to get proper advice
The ICO on consent. Your own conversion rate on the page.
