Education and Curriculum Terms: A Guide for Students and Teachers
Please note: This page explains a word or a process in education. It is general information about the system, the law and the guidance in England — not advice about your child, your school or your exam. If a decision is going against you, get advice from one of the free services we link to before you agree to anything or miss a deadline. If you are revising, check your own exam board's specification: boards word things differently and yours is the one that marks you.
Revising? We write GCSE revision songs — a playlist covering most subjects and the English set texts. Listen to the revision playlist.
29 terms filed under M, showing 11–20 (page 2 of 3).

Memory
How information is encoded, stored and retrieved — and why it fails.

Metaphor
Also called Extended metaphor
Saying one thing IS another, to borrow its qualities. Not a comparison — an assertion.
Microscopy and magnification
Seeing cells, and the calculation that always comes with it.
Mind mapping
A visual map of a topic. Good for connections, poor as a substitute for recall.
Mise-en-scène
Everything placed within the frame: setting, costume, lighting, props, actor placement.
Mitosis and meiosis
Two kinds of cell division. One makes copies, the other makes gametes.
Modal verbs and conditionals

Ready when you are
Have a look round the demo, start a free trial with your own service in it, or ask us the awkward question first. Whichever you pick, the people who answer are the people who built it.
Start a free 14-day trial
Your own organisation, every area switched on, no card and nothing to install. Add your team, your people and your records. If it is not for you, it just stops.
Open the live demo
The real suite with a fictional service already inside it. A throwaway login, no form, and everything you touch is wiped when you leave.
Ask us something
Tell us who you support and what is going wrong at the moment. We will say honestly whether we solve it, and if we do not, who does.
