Trading name
Trading under a name that is not your registered one. Legal, with disclosure rules.
Please note: This page explains what a term means. It is general information, not legal, financial, tax or investment advice, and it does not know anything about your business. Before you sign, file or commit to anything, check it with an accountant, a solicitor, or the official guidance we link to.
What it means
A business may trade under a name different from the owner's name or the company's registered name.
Why it matters
Certain information must still be disclosed: a sole trader must show their own name and a business address on invoices and on the website; a company must show its registered name, number, place of registration and registered office.
What it looks like in practice
Check the name is not already a registered trade mark in your classes, and that it is not too similar to an existing company name.\n\nSome words are sensitive or restricted and need approval.
What to watch out for
Assuming a trading name gives any rights to it. It does not — only registration or established goodwill does.
Where to get proper advice
Companies House for restricted words, and the IPO for trade mark searches.
