Insurance against a customer not paying.

What it means
Trade credit insurance covers non-payment by customers due to insolvency or protracted default, usually up to agreed credit limits per customer.
Why it matters
It protects against the single event most likely to take a solvent business down: a large customer failing owing money.
What it looks like in practice
Insurers set credit limits per buyer and monitor them, which is itself useful intelligence — a limit being cut is a warning about that customer.\n\nUK Export Finance provides support where the private market will not.
What to watch out for
Limits withdrawn at short notice, which removes cover on a customer exactly when the risk has risen. And claims refused for breach of the credit management conditions in the policy.
