What it means
The sales ledger records invoices, credit notes and receipts by customer, producing the aged debtors position.
Why it matters
It is the basis of credit control, and its accuracy determines whether chasing is credible. Chasing an invoice already paid damages the relationship and the credibility of every future chase.
What it looks like in practice
Allocate receipts to invoices promptly. Unallocated cash makes the aged report wrong and the chasing wrong with it.
What to watch out for
Customers with credit limits nobody set. A limit per customer, reviewed, is the basic control against concentration risk becoming a bad debt.
Where to get proper advice
Your accountant.
