What it means
Reliefs include Small Business Rate Relief, retail hospitality and leisure relief, rural rate relief, charitable relief and empty property relief.
Why it matters
Small Business Rate Relief means many small premises pay nothing at all, and businesses have gone years paying bills they did not owe because nobody applied.
What it looks like in practice
Apply through the local council. Small Business Rate Relief generally requires occupying one main property below a rateable value threshold.\n\nCheck the rateable value itself on the Valuation Office Agency site.
What to watch out for
Assuming relief is applied automatically. Some are, many are not, and councils do not chase you to claim.
Where to get proper advice
