Press and media enquiries

What to do when a journalist calls. Prepare before it happens.

Please note: This page explains what a term means. It is general information, not legal, financial, tax or investment advice, and it does not know anything about your business. Before you sign, file or commit to anything, check it with an accountant, a solicitor, or the official guidance we link to.

What it means

A media enquiry may be routine, or it may be the first you hear of a problem.

Why it matters

Nothing is off the record unless expressly agreed in advance, and "no comment" is reported as "no comment".

What it looks like in practice

Agree who speaks and who approves. Ask for the questions, the deadline and the outlet, and call back rather than answering immediately.\n\nGive a short accurate statement rather than a long defensive one.

What to watch out for

Speculating. Say what you know, what you are doing, and when you will say more.

Where to get proper advice

A PR adviser for anything serious, and your insurer if there is legal exposure — see crisis communications.
