Marketplace selling
Selling through Amazon, eBay, Etsy and the rest. Reach you did not build, on terms you do not set.
Please note: This page explains what a term means. It is general information, not legal, financial, tax or investment advice, and it does not know anything about your business. Before you sign, file or commit to anything, check it with an accountant, a solicitor, or the official guidance we link to.
What it means
A marketplace lists your products alongside competitors' and handles discovery, payment and sometimes fulfilment.
Why it matters
It gives immediate access to buyers and takes a substantial share of the margin, and the customer relationship usually belongs to the platform rather than to you.
What it looks like in practice
Model the true margin: referral fee, fulfilment fee, storage, returns and advertising on the platform. Many sellers discover they are trading for nothing after all of it.
What to watch out for
Concentration risk. A suspended account can stop the whole business overnight with no notice and limited appeal, which is a reason to build a direct channel alongside.
Where to get proper advice
The platform's own fee calculator, and your own margin. Sector forums are more honest than the platform's marketing.
