What it means
Hosting is the server your site runs on. A domain is the name, registered through a registrar and renewed periodically.
Why it matters
A lapsed domain takes the website and often the email with it, and recovering one that has been re-registered by somebody else ranges from expensive to impossible.
What it looks like in practice
Own the registrar account in the business's name, not an agency's or an employee's. Turn on auto-renew and check the payment card on it annually.\n\nKeep DNS access under your control even when someone else manages the site.
What to watch out for
Agencies that register the domain in their own name. It is common, and it becomes a hostage at the moment you want to change agency.
