IT asset register
A list of the devices, accounts and software the business relies on.
Please note: This page explains what a term means. It is general information, not legal, financial, tax or investment advice, and it does not know anything about your business. Before you sign, file or commit to anything, check it with an accountant, a solicitor, or the official guidance we link to.
What it means
An IT asset register records hardware, software licences, cloud services, domains and accounts, with an owner for each.
Why it matters
You cannot secure, patch, back up or budget for what you do not know you have. It is also the first thing asked for in a cyber questionnaire or a tender.
What it looks like in practice
Include domain names and their renewal dates, and who controls the registrar account. Lost domains are a common and very damaging failure.\n\nRecord who has administrator access to what.
What to watch out for
Accounts belonging to people who have left. Offboarding that removes the laptop and not the logins is the standard gap.
Where to get proper advice
Your own list, in a spreadsheet, is enough for most small businesses. It just has to exist and be current.
