What it is
Sustainable development balances economic, social and environmental needs over the long term. The three are often drawn as overlapping circles or as three pillars.
Where it applies
GCSE geography throughout, and business and citizenship.
How it works
Almost every geography evaluation reduces to a trade-off between the three pillars: a development that creates jobs, displaces residents and damages habitat.
Sustainability is a spectrum, not a yes or no, and good answers say for whom and over what timescale.
How to use it in your work
Use the three pillars as your structure for any "how sustainable is X" question. It gives you three paragraphs and a conclusion.
Reach a judgement. These questions almost always use an evaluative command word.
Where to get help
Your teacher and your board's specification — options differ enormously between centres, and yours is the one that counts. Bitesize covers the skills; the subject song runs the topics.
