What it is
Hyperbole exaggerates for effect and is not meant literally. Litotes and understatement do the reverse, saying less than is meant.
Where it applies
Literature and Language, and persuasive writing.
How it works
Both work by the gap between the words and the reality. Understatement can be more powerful than exaggeration precisely because the reader supplies the missing intensity.
How to use it in your work
Say which effect the gap creates — comedy, desperation, restraint, irony.
In your own persuasive writing, hyperbole is easy to overuse. One instance lands; five read as shouting.
