Feedback and DIRT

What the teacher wrote on your work, and doing something about it.

Please note: This page explains a word or a process in education. It is general information about the system, the law and the guidance in England — not advice about your child, your school or your exam. If a decision is going against you, get advice from one of the free services we link to before you agree to anything or miss a deadline. If you are revising, check your own exam board's specification: boards word things differently and yours is the one that marks you.

What it is

Feedback is the comment on marked work. DIRT — dedicated improvement and reflection time — is lesson time set aside to act on it.

Where it applies

Every subject.

How it works

Feedback only improves anything if it is acted on, which is why schools schedule time for it. Read-and-file is the commonest failure.

The most useful feedback is specific and forward-looking: what to do next time, not what was wrong.

How to use it in your work

Redraft the paragraph, not just read the comment. Acting on feedback is what changes the next piece.

If a comment is not clear, ask. "More analysis" is not actionable until somebody shows you what it looks like.

Keep a running list of your recurring issues and check work against it before submitting.

Where to get help

Your teacher and your board's specification and mark scheme.
