Data analytics

Using your own data to answer questions about the business.

Please note: This page explains what a term means. It is general information, not legal, financial, tax or investment advice, and it does not know anything about your business. Before you sign, file or commit to anything, check it with an accountant, a solicitor, or the official guidance we link to.

What it means

Analytics ranges from descriptive — what happened — to diagnostic, predictive and prescriptive.

Why it matters

Most small businesses hold enough data to answer their most important questions and have never queried it: which customers are profitable, which products, which channel, which month.

What it looks like in practice

Start with three questions you would act on the answer to. Analytics with no decision attached is a report nobody reads.\n\nData quality determines everything downstream. A chart of accounts or CRM that does not distinguish the things you care about cannot answer questions about them.

What to watch out for

Dashboards that measure what is easy. Revenue by month is easy; margin by customer is useful.

Where to get proper advice

Your accountant and your own systems. Most of the value is in a spreadsheet before it is in a tool.
