Website analytics
Measuring what people do on your site, lawfully.
Please note: This page explains what a term means. It is general information, not legal, financial, tax or investment advice, and it does not know anything about your business. Before you sign, file or commit to anything, check it with an accountant, a solicitor, or the official guidance we link to.
What it means
Analytics records visits, sources, pages and actions, so you can see what marketing produced what behaviour.
Why it matters
Without it, every marketing decision is a guess. With it, most of them are answerable in ten minutes.
What it looks like in practice
Set up conversion tracking for the actions that matter — enquiries, calls, bookings — not just pageviews. A pageview is not a business outcome.\n\nAnalytics cookies generally require consent under PECR, and consent must be as easy to refuse as to accept.
What to watch out for
Cookie banners that only offer "accept". The ICO has been explicit that this is non-compliant, and it has written to the largest UK sites about it.\n\nServer-side or cookieless analytics avoids much of this.
Where to get proper advice
The ICO's cookie guidance. Your analytics platform's own conversion setup.
