CQC registration

Registering with the Care Quality Commission. Mandatory for regulated activities in England.

Please note: This page explains what a term means. It is general information, not legal, financial, tax or investment advice, and it does not know anything about your business. Before you sign, file or commit to anything, check it with an accountant, a solicitor, or the official guidance we link to.

What it means

Providers carrying on a regulated activity — personal care, nursing care, treatment of disease — must register with the CQC, with a registered manager for most services.

Why it matters

Carrying on a regulated activity without registration is a criminal offence. Registration takes months and requires a fit and proper registered manager.

What it looks like in practice

The fundamental standards cover person-centred care, dignity, consent, safety, safeguarding, nutrition, premises, complaints, governance, staffing, fit and proper persons, and duty of candour.\n\nInspection results in ratings that are published and are the first thing families read.

What to watch out for

The registered manager vacancy. A service without one is in breach and it is a common enforcement trigger.\n\nAnd the duty of candour, which requires being open with people when something goes wrong and is a specific regulation.

Where to get proper advice

The CQC's provider guidance, free. A specialist health and social care solicitor for enforcement or registration difficulties.
