Change control

A formal process for agreeing changes to what was agreed.

Please note: This page explains what a term means. It is general information, not legal, financial, tax or investment advice, and it does not know anything about your business. Before you sign, file or commit to anything, check it with an accountant, a solicitor, or the official guidance we link to.

What it means

Change control records a proposed change, assesses its effect on time, cost and risk, and requires agreement before it is implemented.

Why it matters

It converts an argument at the end of the project into a decision during it. Both sides know where they stand, and the record exists.

What it looks like in practice

A change note need not be long: what is changing, why, what it costs, what it does to the timescale, and a signature.

What to watch out for

Verbal agreement to a change. It is unenforceable and it is the standard cause of a disputed final invoice.

Where to get proper advice

A commercial solicitor for the contract clause. After that it is a template and a habit.
