Call to action

The instruction telling somebody what to do next. Specific beats clever.

Please note: This page explains what a term means. It is general information, not legal, financial, tax or investment advice, and it does not know anything about your business. Before you sign, file or commit to anything, check it with an accountant, a solicitor, or the official guidance we link to.

What it means

A call to action is the button, link or line telling the reader the next step: Book a call, Get a quote, Start your free trial.

Why it matters

People do what they are asked to do and skip what they are not. Pages with no clear next step convert badly regardless of how good the copy is.

What it looks like in practice

Say what happens, not what to click. "Get your quote in 2 minutes" outperforms "Submit" reliably.\n\nOne primary action per page, repeated, rather than five competing ones.

What to watch out for

Hiding it below the fold on mobile, where most traffic is. And using a word that sounds like a commitment when it is not — "Buy now" where the next step is actually a quote.

Where to get proper advice

Your own analytics and your own margin. No agency can tell you what a customer is worth to you.
