Health A to Z

Most health pages tell you what a condition is. Very few tell you what it is like to sit beside somebody who has one. This library does both. Search by name, or by the name you know it under.

Important: This page is general information, not medical advice, and it is not a diagnosis. If you are worried about your health or someone else's, speak to a GP, pharmacist, or call 111. In an emergency, call 999.

500 conditions, showing 41–50 (page 5 of 50).

B

Back pain

Also called Lower back pain, Sciatica

The single biggest cause of disability worldwide. Almost never dangerous, and rest is the wrong instinct.

Bacterial vaginosis and thrush

Also called BV, Vaginal thrush, Candida, Vaginal discharge

Two different causes of discharge, treated differently, and routinely confused. Washing inside the vagina makes both more likely.

Baker's cyst

Also called Popliteal cyst

A fluid swelling behind the knee, caused by something inside the joint. A burst one looks exactly like a blood clot.

Bedwetting

Also called Nocturnal enuresis

Involuntary wetting at night. Common, not the child's fault, and punishing it does nothing except harm.

Bell's palsy

Also called Facial palsy

Sudden weakness of one side of the face. Usually temporary, and treatment works best within 72 hours.

Benign prostate enlargement

Also called BPH, Enlarged prostate

The prostate grows with age and squeezes the urethra. Very common, not cancer, and retention is the emergency.

Bereavement and grief

Also called Grief, Loss

Not an illness, and not a process with stages. What love costs when somebody dies.

Binge eating disorder

Also called BED

The most common eating disorder in the UK, and the one people are least likely to be offered help for.

Bipolar disorder

Also called Manic depression

Mood that swings between depression and mania, in episodes lasting weeks. Not a description of a changeable temperament.

Bladder and bowel incontinence

Also called Incontinence, Continence problems

Extremely common, rarely discussed, and very often treatable. The silence is the biggest obstacle.
