Health A to Z

Most health pages tell you what a condition is. Very few tell you what it is like to sit beside somebody who has one. This library does both. Search by name, or by the name you know it under.

Important: This page is general information, not medical advice, and it is not a diagnosis. If you are worried about your health or someone else's, speak to a GP, pharmacist, or call 111. In an emergency, call 999.

500 conditions, showing 481–490 (page 49 of 50).

U

Usher syndrome

Deafness from birth with sight that narrows over years. The commonest genetic cause of deafblindness.

Uveitis

Also called Iritis, Inflammation of the eye

Inflammation inside the eye and a leading preventable cause of sight loss. A painful red eye with light sensitivity is a same-day emergency.

V

Varicose veins

Also called Venous insufficiency, Venous eczema

Not just cosmetic. Untreated venous disease is the commonest cause of leg ulcers in the UK.

Vascular dementia

Dementia caused by damaged blood supply to the brain. The second commonest type, and the most preventable.

Vasculitis

Also called Inflammation of the blood vessels, GPA, ANCA vasculitis

Inflammation of blood vessels, affecting almost any organ. Diagnosis is often late because it looks like a virus that will not go away.

Vertigo

Also called BPPV, Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, Labyrinthitis, Ménière's disease

A spinning sensation, not just dizziness. The commonest cause is fixed by a manoeuvre that takes two minutes.

Visual impairment

Also called Sight loss, Blindness, Partial sight

Around 2 million people in the UK live with sight loss. Most of them see something, and almost none see nothing.

Vitamin B12 deficiency

Also called Pernicious anaemia, B12 deficiency

Cheap to treat, and if it is left too long the nerve damage does not come back.

Vitamin D deficiency

Also called Low vitamin D, Osteomalacia, Rickets

Common in the UK because of the latitude. Everybody is advised to take a supplement in winter, and some people all year.

Vitiligo

The immune system destroying pigment cells, leaving pale patches. Physically harmless, and psychologically anything but.
