What it is
Interpretations change with new evidence, new questions, new methods and the concerns of the time in which they are written.
Where it applies
GCSE and A Level history.
How it works
New evidence — archives opening, new archaeology — is only one reason. Historians also ask different questions: social history asked about ordinary people that political history had not, and found different pasts.
How to use it in your work
Give a specific reason, not 'they have different opinions'.
Use the date the interpretation was written as evidence about the questions being asked then.
Avoid saying one interpretation is simply right.
