SEN register

The school's list of pupils identified with SEND. Being on it is not a label to fear.

Please note: This page explains a word or a process in education. It is general information about the system, the law and the guidance in England — not advice about your child, your school or your exam. If a decision is going against you, get advice from one of the free services we link to before you agree to anything or miss a deadline. If you are revising, check your own exam board's specification: boards word things differently and yours is the one that marks you.

What it is

The SEN register records pupils identified as having special educational needs, at SEN support or with an EHCP. It feeds the school census.

Where it applies

All schools.

How it works

Being added should be a decision made with parents and recorded, and it should trigger the graduated approach rather than being a status.

Being removed should also be a decision, not a drift — and a pupil can move on and off as needs change.

What you can ask for

Ask whether your child is on it, and when they were added or removed and why. Parents are frequently not told either way.

Ask what being on it changes in practice. If the answer is nothing, that is the question to pursue.

Where to get help

SENDIASS for free local advice, IPSEA and Contact nationally.
