CV
A one- or two-page summary of what you have done. Tailored, not generic.
Please note: This page explains a word or a process in education. It is general information about the system, the law and the guidance in England — not advice about your child, your school or your exam. If a decision is going against you, get advice from one of the free services we link to before you agree to anything or miss a deadline. If you are revising, check your own exam board's specification: boards word things differently and yours is the one that marks you.
What it is
A curriculum vitae summarises education, experience, skills and interests for an employer.
Where it applies
Anyone applying for work, and required for most apprenticeships and part-time jobs.
How it works
Most CVs are read in well under a minute, so the top third decides whether the rest is read at all.\n\nFor a school leaver, education comes first; once you have relevant experience, that does.
How to use it in your work
Tailor it to the role. A generic CV sent to twenty employers performs worse than five tailored ones.\n\nUse evidence. "Reliable" is a claim; "ran the till alone on Saturday mornings for a year" is evidence of it.\n\nKeep it to one page at this stage, plain formatting, no photograph, and get someone to proofread it.\n\nYou do not have to disclose a disability, and you may want to if an adjustment helps at interview.
