What it means
Practical steps include measuring energy use and emissions, reducing waste, changing procurement, and reporting credibly.
Why it matters
Larger customers increasingly ask suppliers for carbon data, so it has become a commercial requirement as well as an environmental one — see ESG.
What it looks like in practice
Start with what you can measure: energy bills, fuel, waste volumes. Scope 1 and 2 emissions are calculable from bills; Scope 3 is harder and is what customers increasingly ask about.\n\nThe SME Climate Hub provides free tools and a recognised commitment.
What to watch out for
Claims you cannot substantiate. The CMA's Green Claims Code and the ASA both enforce, and "carbon neutral" claims based on offsets are under particular scrutiny.
Where to get proper advice
The SME Climate Hub and the Government's environmental reporting guidance, both free.
