Single customer view

One record per customer, joined across every system.

Please note: This page explains what a term means. It is general information, not legal, financial, tax or investment advice, and it does not know anything about your business. Before you sign, file or commit to anything, check it with an accountant, a solicitor, or the official guidance we link to.

What it means

A single customer view links the records a business holds about the same person or organisation across sales, accounts, support and marketing.

Why it matters

Without it, the same customer is three records, the lifetime value is unknowable, and somebody gets a marketing email the day after they complained.

What it looks like in practice

It needs a consistent identifier and a rule for matching duplicates. Getting the identifier right at the point of entry is far cheaper than deduplicating later.

What to watch out for

Merging records carries data protection implications — consent and preferences must survive the merge, and marketing consent given for one relationship does not automatically cover another.

Where to get proper advice

Your CRM's own deduplication tools, and the ICO on consent.
