Job evaluation and pay bands

A structure for what roles are worth. Defensible, and it prevents ad hoc drift.

What it means

Job evaluation assesses roles by factors such as skill, responsibility and complexity, grouping them into bands with pay ranges.

Why it matters

It gives a consistent basis for pay decisions and is a defence in an equal pay claim, where the comparison is work of equal value.

What it looks like in practice

Bands need a range with a rate for a new starter and a rate for somebody fully competent, and a rule for movement through it.

What to watch out for

Equal pay. Men and women doing equal work must receive equal pay, and "that is what we negotiated" is not a defence.

Where to get proper advice
