What it means
The nominal or general ledger holds the balance of every account in the chart of accounts, fed by the sales and purchase ledgers, the bank and journals.
Why it matters
It is the source of the trial balance, the profit and loss and the balance sheet. Everything reported comes from here.
What it looks like in practice
Reviewing it periodically catches miscoding — costs in the wrong account distort the margin analysis without changing the total.
What to watch out for
A suspense account with a growing balance. It means something is not understood, and it grows until somebody investigates.
Where to get proper advice
Your accountant.
