Management accounts pack
The monthly reporting bundle. What should be in it, and what usually is not.
Please note: This page explains what a term means. It is general information, not legal, financial, tax or investment advice, and it does not know anything about your business. Before you sign, file or commit to anything, check it with an accountant, a solicitor, or the official guidance we link to.
What it means
A management pack is the set of internal reports produced monthly or quarterly: profit and loss, balance sheet, cash summary, and usually commentary.
Why it matters
It is the difference between steering and reviewing. Businesses receiving one monthly make different decisions from those receiving statutory accounts once a year.
What it looks like in practice
A useful pack is short: this month against the same month last year, year to date, gross margin split by the parts of the business that behave differently, aged debtors, and a cash position with a forecast.
What to watch out for
A forty-page pack nobody reads. If it does not answer a question you actually have, ask for it to change — it is your report and you are paying for it.
Where to get proper advice
Most accountancy firms and many bookkeepers offer this monthly. Owners consistently overestimate what it costs.
