Loyalty schemes

Rewarding repeat custom. Data as much as discount.

Please note: This page explains what a term means. It is general information, not legal, financial, tax or investment advice, and it does not know anything about your business. What it means

A loyalty scheme rewards repeat purchase with points, discounts or benefits, usually in exchange for identifying the customer.

Why it matters

The data is often worth more than the discount costs: knowing what an individual buys enables personalisation and a real lifetime value figure.

What it looks like in practice

Model the cost as a discount percentage and check it against margin. A points scheme is a discount with a delay.\n\nThe data collected needs a lawful basis and a privacy notice covering the analysis you intend.

What to watch out for

Rewarding customers who would have bought anyway, which is most of them. Test incrementality before scaling.

Where to get proper advice

Your own figures, which are the only ones that describe your business.
