Remote and hybrid working

Staff working away from the workplace, and the practicalities.

Please note: This page explains what a term means. It is general information, not legal, financial, tax or investment advice, and it does not know anything about your business. What it means

Hybrid working splits time between the workplace and elsewhere. Fully remote working means no regular workplace attendance.

Why it matters

It affects contracts, health and safety, data security, tax and expenses, and none of it happens automatically.

What it looks like in practice

The place of work in the contract matters. A permanent change usually requires agreement, and a flexible working request is the formal route.\n\nHealth and safety duties extend to homeworkers, and a display screen assessment is still required.

What to watch out for

Working abroad. An employee working from another country can create tax and social security obligations, and sometimes a permanent establishment, for the employer.

Where to get proper advice
