What it means
Footfall counts visitors. Retail conversion is transactions divided by footfall. Average transaction value and items per basket complete the picture.
Why it matters
Sales equal footfall times conversion times average transaction value. Knowing which of the three moved tells you what to fix.
What it looks like in practice
A quiet week with steady conversion is a footfall problem — marketing, weather, location. Steady footfall with falling conversion is a shop-floor problem — stock, staffing, price.
What to watch out for
Measuring sales alone. It tells you something happened and not what.
Where to get proper advice
Your own EPOS data and a door counter, which is inexpensive.
