Tax investigation insurance
Cover for the accountancy fees of an HMRC enquiry. Cheap, and it removes a decision.
Please note: This page explains what a term means. It is general information, not legal, financial, tax or investment advice, and it does not know anything about your business. What it means
Fee protection insurance pays the professional costs of responding to an HMRC compliance check.
Why it matters
An enquiry can generate thousands in accountancy fees even when the return was entirely correct, and the cost alone pushes some businesses into conceding points they should not.
What it looks like in practice
Usually offered by accountants as an annual add-on. Check what it covers — VAT, PAYE, corporation tax, IR35 — and the limits.
What to watch out for
Cover taken out after an enquiry has started, which is excluded. It has to be in place beforehand.
Where to get proper advice
GOV.UK for the current rates and thresholds, which move most years. Your accountant before acting — this is exactly the kind of question a fee is for.
