An Economic Operators Registration and Identification number identifies a business to customs authorities.

Without one you cannot make customs declarations, and goods sit at the border. It is free and takes days, not weeks.
What it looks like in practice
A GB EORI covers Great Britain. Moving goods to Northern Ireland or trading in the EU may need an XI or an EU EORI as well.
