Account management

Looking after existing customers so they buy again and buy more.

Please note: This page explains what a term means. It is general information, not legal, financial, tax or investment advice, and it does not know anything about your business. Before you sign, file or commit to anything, check it with an accountant, a solicitor, or the official guidance we link to.

What it means

Account management is the ongoing relationship with existing customers: reviews, planning, problem-solving and identifying additional needs.

Why it matters

Existing customers are cheaper to sell to, more likely to buy, and the source of referrals. Most businesses staff acquisition and not this.

What it looks like in practice

A simple account plan per significant customer: who the contacts are, what they buy, what else they could use, when the contract renews, and what risk there is of losing them.\n\nSchedule reviews rather than waiting for problems.

What to watch out for

Only speaking to a customer when something has gone wrong or a renewal is due. Both conversations go better if they are not the only ones.

Where to get proper advice

Your own pipeline data and your own customers, asked directly. Most of this is not answerable from outside the business.
